The Department of Accounting was established in 1967. It started with a batch of 10 students in the then 3-year degree programme. With the take-off of the Semester system in 1996, the B Sc. Accounting programme runs over a 4-year period. The Department is initially located at the Kongo Campus of the University but now is moved to Samaru as one of the six academic Units within the ABU Business School. The other five academic Units are the Departments of Business Administration, Insurance, Marketing, Banking and Finance and Economics Department.
The Department has transformed from a modest beginning into a large academic unit in the University. It commenced M.Sc. Accounting and Finance programme in 1978, and in 1984, PhD Accounting and Finance was introduced. The Department also introduced other postgraduate programmes including Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting and Finance which started in 1998, Masters in Accounting in 2013 and Master of Philosophy in Accounting and Finance in 2015. The Department’s admission policy is merit-based and in accordance with the Federal Government admission criteria, with equal opportunity given to all.
It is noteworthy that since the commencement of M.Sc. Accounting and Finance, PhD Accounting and Finance and the subsequent Postgraduate programmes, the Department has succeeded in training thousands of graduates. Many of its alumni are now occupying responsible positions as accounting practitioners and educators in several establishments both nationally and internationally.
The Department is very committed to staff development. During the last three years 15 academic staff completed their PhD within and outside Nigeria. Presently, there are 9 academic staff members at different stages of their Doctoral Degree programme.
